Love is in the air… It’s almost spring time and it seems everywhere I go people are talking about some aspect of love. I am generally a person who doesn’t tell people I love them easily. Yet, I find myself speaking these words more and more lately. At our service yesterday, the guest speaker read a very liberal version of 1 Corinthians 13 and it made me think about it a bit more. I have been studying in the Message translation of the Bible lately and here is what is says.

1 Corinthians 13 (The Message)

The Way of Love

1 If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. 2If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. 3-7If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
   Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
   Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
   Puts up with anything,
   Trusts God always,
   Always looks for the best,
   Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

8-10Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over some day; praying in tongues will end; understanding will reach its limit. We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is always incomplete. But when the Complete arrives, our incompletes will be canceled.

11When I was an infant at my mother’s breast, I gurgled and cooed like any infant. When I grew up, I left those infant ways for good.

12We don’t yet see things clearly. We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!

13But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love.

Since I say that I believe the Bible is God’s Word, I have to believe what I just read as the truth. The truth is – Reality Bites! I say that because I can’t honestly say that I walk this scripture out in my life on a daily basis. Do I always look for the best in people? There are certain people I am guilty of expecting only the worst from in just about every situation. That most certainly ISN’T love.

That’s just one aspect of this scripture. There are many other areas where I fall short. I am grateful that we are living in the era of grace and God allows us to grow in Him over time. Does this mean that I shouldn’t strive to do better? Absolutely not. I am choosing to die daily to my flesh and hopefully one day I will be able to walk this out on a daily basis. I am reminded that this first begins with a  CHOICE to do what the Word says to do even when everything in me screams to go the opposite way.

Needless to say, before the words I LOVE YOU cross my lips again I will strive to have my actions match my words. Love is a choice and a heart attitude.

I am thankful to the Lord for this time of learning more of Him and how to really die to self in order to be who He wants me to be. As I continue to die to self I will truly learn how to love Him, myself and others around me.
