More of what is happening in Haiti from the voice of a trip participant.

Just pure out amazing!!!!!!! It feels like before we came they were happy and when we came they are even happier. Each and every person has the biggest smile on their faces. They all praise God more than most of us praise. Today an 8 year old girl was praising God in a way that is completely out of how I’m used to. We were doing a VBS and we were just singing a simple song. Everyone around her was clapping to the beat of the song but she was on her knees with her hands lifted to the sky. Her eyes were shut, closing off the world from her mind. Each time everybody clapped she swayed to a different side. Even though there are those times when you are thanking God there are those points that hurt you from the inside out. We were on our way to the small community of Aztec and sitting on the side of the road was a dying dog. His legs were broken and it was trying to pull himself with his front legs to the side of the road. You could tell that he hasn’t eating any food in a long time. You could see its back bone and each and every rib sitting on its body. I just pray that there is more to come with all of these people.

A day in God’s country,  watching the joy pour out of these people who seem to have so little but have all the hope in the world!

Today we prayed healing over a few people, and tomorrow we will be taking a young mother and her infant to a clinic to seek medical attention for an infection that the mother has. But yet, in pain and full of infection she still has hope and Joy.

The children here are amazing, they love little games. I taught a few of them Hot Hands this morning and it warmed my heart to see them playing amongst themselves this afternoon. But as soon as I walked up they all wanted to play with the White woman and of course, I play! More hot hands then I have ever played before with no words, only laughter and smiles! Trey played hackie sac with them this afternoon and the laughter was such a beautiful sound!

Even with all the joy there is still pain and suffering in Haiti…..Mothers willing to hand their child over to a complete stranger with hope for their child to have a better life then what they can provide is heart breaking. Telling them no is so hard, it breaks a person’s heart, but taking their children will not fix the problem.

Tomorrow is another day, a day of that we will seek Gods will.

From Toya –
I am so proud of this team. It’s amazing to see how they completely empty themselves day after day. Each night as we debrief there are tears of joy and tears of pain. Today the team helped to clear the rubble away from what used to be a home. The Pastor of this community asked us to help move the rubble so that the children had a safe place to sleep tonight.  What a joy to be a part of something so precious.  We are working with the Pastor’s of Haiti to help change this nation. Today he told me that he has read about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He said that we (our team) are proof that God has allowed his dream to come to pass. “How strange it is to the Haitian people to see black and white people working together to help total strangers in Haiti. How can it be he asked that there is one black woman who is “leading” a group of white people and yet there is no fighting only working together. This is nothing short of amazing and you must know that God’s hand is at work. Who else could make this happen?” I had tears in my eyes then and I have them again now as I type this.

While walking down the street a man stopped us and was speaking very animated to me. (He assumed I was Haitian) The translator told me that he was so excited to see the White American’s coming and working to clear houses. He assumed that American’s don’t work hard, they only have other’s working for them. He was so happy that the American people were coming to work. He said look at them, they are doing the work that some Haitian’s won’t do.

My goal is to see more black and white people working together in missions fields all over the world. I don’t want to be the lone black woman on any team any more. Together we can impact the world. There is no telling what God is going to do in the hearts and minds of us as a team as well as the people that we have worked with this week. There are days when I question if I have made the right decisions. I ask the Lord, did I hear you clearly?, Am I really in your will? Today only confirms what I heard a long time ago… I am where He wants me, doing what He has called me to do.
